White riesling arrived to our region in 1822, when the Archduke John of Austria planted a sample vineyard with it on his estate Meranovo to the south of Maribor. It is a cool-climate variety, modest in terms of alcohol content even when fully mature, but rich in acids, which give it an exceptional longevity. Acids are typically lower in our region as compared to its homeland Germany, and the character has a more pronounced fruity, spicy note. It can be dry, semi-sweet or sweet; it is good in any style.
White riesling is a wine made from fully ripe grapes, which underlines its freshness and varietal character. Grapes for white riesling are grown only at the Cerovec site, which produces somewhat heavier rieslings. When it enters the market, the wine is young and slightly reserved, but in time it will show its full character, which persist for at least a decade.
